This article includes instructions on how to use chat session in Cisco Jabber. This application is included with all firm-issued workstations and can be used, among other things, to message firm colleagues.


Requirements

  • Firm-issued workstation
  • Firm-issued telephone number/Extension
  • Connection to the Firm network via wired, in office wireless, or VPN
  • Jabber running and signed in

Overview

Jabber has the ability to host a chat session between Smith & Howard colleagues. These chat sessions can be between two or more people, and can allow you to send messages, files, or share your screen. For more information about Jabber, see:


The chat window

When you begin a chat, or someone else sends you a chat, Jabber's "Chat Window" will open. This is an overview of that window:


  1. Conversation List - As you enter more chats, they go to the same window. You can navigate between the different chat sessions here
  2. Info - The name person or people you are currently chatting with
  3. Add - Add person to your Jabber contacts - This button will only appear if the person you are chatting with is not already a contact
  4. Share Screen - Begins a screen sharing session with the person you are chatting with
  5. Open Audio Options - Allows you to change your audio options in Jabber
  6. Call - Begins a call to the person you are chatting with
  7. Text area - Enter the message you wish to send to the other person in this area

Chat Features

  • Send a screen capture

    • Allows you to take a screenshot of your computer and then send it to the chat session
  • Send a File

    • Allows you to send a file to the chat session
  • Insert an emoticon

    • Allows you to insert emoticon into your message

  • Edit the font

    • Allows you to edit the font of the messages you send

  • Add participants

    • Allows you to add other colleagues to the chat session

  • Show this chat in a new window

    • Will separate this chat from the main chat window into its own window
