This article includes instructions on how to manage audio settings in Cisco Jabber. This application is included with all firm-issued workstations and can be used, among other things, to receive and control phone calls.

Requirements

  • Firm-issued workstation
  • Firm-issued telephone number/Extension
  • Connection to the Firm network via wired, in office wireless, or VPN
  • Jabber running and signed in

Overview

The audio settings within Jabber determine which speakers and microphone are used during calls made through the computer. Jabber can use your laptop's speakers and microphone to conduct a call, similar to a speakerphone. You also have the option of plugging in headphones to be used for a call. The settings within Jabber will determine which device is used. For more information about Jabber, see:

Setting the audio device for alerts and calls

  1.  In the Hub window, click the menu "gear" button in the upper right corner
  2. Select File>Options
  3. The options window will open

  4. Select Audio from the left-hand menu

  5. This will open the Audio Settings. Here you can set the device to use for

  • Ringer/Alerts - This is the speaker that will ring when you receive a phone call
  • Speaker - This is the speaker that you hear a call's audio from
  • Microphone - The microphone that picks up your voice during a call
  • For each Audio type, choose the device you wish to use from the drop-down menu. In this example, we are choosing to use the "Headphones" for the Speaker

  • Adjust the volume for each device using the slider beneath. The slider for the Alerts/Speaker makes the audio you hear louder, and the Microphone slider makes the microphone more sensitive

  • You can test the Speaker to ensure you've selected the correct device by clicking the "Test/Play" button to the right of the Speaker section. This will begin playing audio from your selected device. To stop the audio, press the button again

  • To test your microphone, use the bars below the "Microphone" section. As the selected microphone picks up audio, the bar will fill with blue dots.

  • Once the settings are configured correctly, Click "OK" to save the changes and close the window

Tips:

  • Setting the ringer to "All Devices" will play the ringer for incoming calls through any speakers connected. This helps ensure you hear incoming calls if you have a headset plugged in, but don't keep it on your head at all times, such as when working from home. Having this set while at the office will however result in having both your laptop and desk phone ring at the same time, often with different ringtones. Your neighbors may not appreciate cacophony when you receive a phone call.
  • If you frequently switch between multiple audio devices, you can adjust the priority of which one Jabber will default to under the "Advanced" settings. Move a device higher in the list to make Jabber default to it earlier.
