Requirements:

  • Firm issued workstation

Overview:

Windows can playback audio through any device that is connected to your laptop, whether the laptop's built-in speakers, headphones, or attached speakers. Windows may not always make the correct choice though, and it may default to a different device than what you want. You can use Windows' sound options to change the playback device to the one that you want to use.

NOTE: Sometimes Windows will choose to play back audio through a device that does not have speakers attached (oftentimes a docking station with an audio port, but with no speakers attached to the audio port). In these instances it can seem as if the sound is not working.

Changing the Audio Playback Device

  1. Click the Sound icon in the system tray, the icon in the lower-right of your main monitor, next to the clock

  1. Click on the current playback device to open the Playback Device Selection options
  2. Choose the device that you wish to use. You may need to try multiple devices to find the one that you are wanting
